The New DChat, Rebuilt From the Ground Up

This is not a normal update. Every screen in DChat was rebuilt as a native Android app, on a new core underneath. It is the same DChat with the same chats, and it is the fastest and smoothest it has ever been.

  • A fully native app: faster to open, smoother to scroll
  • A fresh look on every screen
  • Your account and chats move over by themselves, nothing to set up
  • Multiple accounts: long-press the Profile tab to add one or switch
  • Profile effects, with Ember for founders
  • A tablet layout, short invite links and richer articles

Rebuilt from the ground up

The old app was built on a cross-platform toolkit that drew every screen through extra layers. The new one is written directly for Android, and everything that handles encryption, sync and the network now lives in one shared core that the web app uses too, as will the iPhone app we are building.

What you notice is speed. The app opens quicker, chats open without a pause, long lists scroll without stutter, and animations stay smooth on mid-range phones.

Nothing to set up

Update from Google Play and DChat moves your identity, keys and chats into the new app on its first launch. There is no recovery phrase to type and no sign in. Your username, contacts, groups and channels are where you left them.

More than one account

Long-press the Profile tab to add a second account or switch between them. Each account keeps its own identity and its own chats.

Profile effects

Dress up your profile with animated effects. Everyone who joined early as a founder gets Ember.

Made for bigger screens, and for sharing

On a tablet, your chat list and the open chat sit side by side. Groups and chat folders get short invite links that are easy to paste anywhere. Channel articles now support tables, checklists and collapsible sections, and articles behind links open inside the app instead of a browser.

And in 0.802

A follow-up the same week tuned the app for older phones: effects now adjust to what each device can handle, so cheaper phones stay smooth. It also fixed problems with calls, profile photos and sending videos.

Thank you for being part of DChat from the early days.
